Adnams Old Ale 4.1% ABV

This is a mild ale style beer brewed with East Anglian pale ale and Crystal malted barley and Boadicea hops, dark red brown in colour with an aroma of caramel and nutty chocolate. The toffee and chocolate also come through on the palette along with hints of red fruits, all balanced by a smooth bitterness. A traditional speciality winter warmer. An old recipe dating back to 1890. Flavour of fruit, malt and roast grain, with a hint of caramel. Adnams Old Ale is a rare treat.

History Boondoggle takes its name from a Scots/American word meaning 'work of little value' and by extension has come to mean 'Jolly' as in going on a jolly or if you're American going on a Boondoggle!

The beer was first brewed as a summer special for the Hogshead Chain of pubs but in 1996 was re-launched to the whole market and is available each year from May - September

Brakspear Oxford Gold Organic Beer

Tasting note

Brakspear Oxford Gold is a remarkably zesty brew, with fresh, citrussy aromas and a firm, fruity flavour. Pale ale malts provide the beer with its gold-gilt shimmer, spruced by a hatful of crystal malts to give body, texture and a delicate honey’d wrap.

Organic Target hops deliver a shamelessly fresh perfume, whilst late hopping with organic Goldings and fermentation by our Brakspear yeasts give Brakspear Oxford Gold a fabulous, fruity finish.

This beer is a perfect partner for fish dishes, shellfish, chicken or salads.

Bread of Heaven is a traditional 4.0% cask ale which is described as having a rich hop aroma, balanced by a moreish fruit finish. It will be on sale throughout the rugby season.

The cask ale version of Bread of Heaven, which quickly sold out when it previewed at the recent Great Welsh Beer Festival, will be available from pubs, bars and clubs across Wales this week. Its rugby ball-shaped pump clip features the WRU Official Sponsor logo and the words ‘Bread of Heaven’ and ‘feed me ‘till I want no more’ from the famous Welsh hymn, ‘Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer’.

Butcombe Brunel IPA – 5% ABV

A 3.5% abv cask beer with a crisp, refreshing flavour, Canterbury Jack is hand-crafted by Shepherd Neame's team of award-winning brewers, using the highest quality ingredients.

Canterbury Jack is brewed with pale and crystal malts and gently hopped with Cascade and East Kent Goldings, grown within a few miles of the brewery. The water used is taken from an artesian well in the chalk beneath the Shepherd Neame brewery in Faversham, Kent.

This pale chestnut beer tantalises the nostrils with the aroma of grapefruit before full-bodied, malty, citrus notes delight the palate, leading to a crisp, refreshing, gentle bitter finish.

Foxes used to frequent the grounds of Highgate Brewery, and so it seemed only appropriate to name a beer after them, or their head anyway, nob being the Old English word for head.

Fox's Nob pours a dark gold/amber colour, and gives off a very odd aroma - slightly floral and quite fruity, red apples and berries perhaps. The flavour is very much more of that odd fruitiness, not citrus, quite sweetish with what tastes like elderflower in there, although it's not listed as an ingredient. With a lingering and slightly unpleasant dry finish the whole taste experience was not one I can say I enjoyed so not likely to visit again.

Early Bird Spring Hop Ale is brewed with the Early Bird single hop variety - hence the name!

This light gold beer is full-bodied, distinctive and refreshing as a spring day, with a malty undertone.

Hound Dog, 4%, 

Celebrate the arrival of spring with this light and thirst-quenching dark-gold bitter that first emerged in 1999. The hops are English Goldings and Slovenian Styrian Goldings, both of which offer distinctive citrus fruit notes. The nose pulsates with a surge of lemon and lime, while there is a light touch of toffee and vanilla on the palate followed by an exquisite balance of fruity hoppiness and malt on the long bittersweet finish. Try with a grilled white fish such as haddock or fish and chips.

A drinkable, tawny coloured ale, with a light hoppiness in the aroma. It has a good balance of malt and bitterness in the mouth, underscored by fruitiness, with a clean, hoppy aftertaste.

Awards
First brewed in 1994, ‘Jouster' has twice been a finalist at CAMRA's Great British Beer Festival and voted as one of CAMRA's “Champion Beers of the Year.”

In 1999 it was also recognised as ‘Gloucestershire's Champion Best Bitter' as well as winning several other CAMRA regional beer festivals.

Haggis Hunter is a very hoppy beer, which suits me down to the ground. The blurb on the bottle describes the taste as "citrus and fruity with an underlying biscuit character". Not sure about the citrus bit but I suppose I can pick up some kind of biscuit in there - definitely more of a Rich Tea than a Garibaldi though.

This beer is now brewed under licence for Carlsberg, by Marstons. It uses styrian golden dry hops. This Slovenian hop has a strong citrus aroma clearly discernable on the finished ale

Young's Kew Gold (4.8% ABV)

Kew Gold is a 100% malt brew with English Lager malt with Styrian hops. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. With no artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.

We spent nearly a year developing the Blonde. It's what we call a hybrid - somewhere between a lager and an ale. The aromatic fruity hops give it an amazing nose and the lager malts add to the unique flavour. A distinctive and individual beer that we're very proud of. (Neil Morrissey)

• "Old Speckled Hen" is a popular bitter, available both as a cask ale and pasteurised in bottles. First brewed in 1979 by Morland Brewery in Abingdon, Oxfordshire to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the MG car company setting up in Abingdon, and named after the brewery's own MG car - the paint splattered Owld' Speckled 'Un. Brewed since 1999 by Greene King. Greene King has retained the strain of yeast first used in 1896.

In August 2006, Greene King announced that the abv of draught Old Speckled Hen (cask and keg) would be reduced from 5.2% to 4.5%, though the bottled and canned versions would remain at 5.2%

This is an open-side flanker. A huge amount of malt character is carefully supported by a fruity acidity which is wonderfully refreshing. The hops are long and easily tackled, and the late hopped Styrians really shine. Rucking good beer!

Sunchaser 4.0% ABV

Sunchaser Blonde is a thirst-quenching beer made in the style of a continental lager. Hence you will find subtle fruit flavours and a little sweetness within. Brewed using Yorkshire Square fermenters, Tetley’s Cask has the smooth hop character of a classic Yorkshire bitter.

George Philliskirk of the Beer Academy says: “At a modest 3.8% ABV, Tetley’s is easy drinking and reliable – a true ‘session’ bitter. I developed a taste for it as a student at Leeds University and subsequently enjoyed many a pint in the Adelphi, a stone’s throw from the Tetley’s brewery in Leeds. A great pub for a great beer.”
